Finding the “lost” time in your day

I have been promoting my book to radio stations with an angle on “Is Technology Making You Fat?”  It has offered me the opportunity to really explore this issue with myself.  Not that I’m fat, but I have recognized that I do spend way too much time with technology – some of it necessary, but, I must admit (getting myself out of denial) that I probably spend a good hour a day just surfing, checking Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and, an occasional Free Cell game.

It seems when I hit a mental wall, rather than get up and do something other than staring at a piece of technology, I sometimes don’t.  I procrastinate to the point where my opportunity to do something to help me feel better and look better has gone and I need to get back to work.

Now, for me it isn’t too much of  a problem because, for the most part, it is still a natural part of my routine to get daily exercise, but I started to think how much more productive I would be if I used that “lost” time in a more useful way.

So, for the last few days, I have become more aware of this “habit” of mine and have taken action to change my ways.  And, you know what?  It wasn’t that hard to do and the benefit can easily be seen.  I have more things checked off my “to do” list, I have more energy and have gotten a lot more done.

Take a day to observe your potential technology traps and see if you can’t find more time in your day to take better care of yourself.

The initial splash is the hardest part

This weekend, I finally took my first big splash into my beautiful sparkling pool.  I absolutely love to swim!  Yet, even though my desire to swim is strong, I approached the pool many times, putting my toes in, only to pull them out again as the chilly water made me retreat.  “Maybe later,” I’d delay.

So as Sunday night approached, and, I still hadn’t partaken in an activity I had so wished I could do only a month before, I decided, it’s now or never.

As I stood there facing the beautiful water, I felt like my feet were glued to the cement.  I took a look up in the sky, I said a little prayer, and SPLASH!  I hit the water.  It was an incredible experience.  I felt the stress just Swoosh behind me, the heat of the day transformed into a cool, refreshing moment – I emerged, still a bit chilly, and started to stroke.  As I did each lap, I paused and recognized just how great it felt – so liberating and free!  When I was done, I toweled off, sat in the glorious sun, my heart beating strongly and, oh my gosh, did I feel incredible!  My life transformed, I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the day.

Swimming is probably the best exercise for relieving stress.  Something about that splash removes all the stress of the day.  But, as most of us know, any kind of physical activity helps us relieve stress, have more energy, be more productive and become in a better mood. We know the power and the wonderful aftermath of exercise, yet, taking that first “splash” is so difficult for most of us, and is the primary reason why we don’t do it.

If you are having trouble getting into an exercise routine, focus on the “getting started” part.  Often times we site “I don’t have time” as an excuse to not move our body, when in actuality, it’s the procrastination, the delay of the initial “splash” that is holding us back.  We think about it too much, until we talk ourselves out of it.
